Beosystem 9000c: the second member of the Recreated Classics series
Bang & Olufsen has revived another iconic product and created the Beosystem 9000c sound system. The new system includes the fully refurbished and redesigned Beosound 9000 CD player, a 1990s model, combined with Bang & Olufsen’s modern Beolab 28 speakers for a sensational listening experience.
Following the success of the recreated Beogram 4000c turntable in 2020, the Beosystem 9000c is the second project in the Recreated Classics range, demonstrating Bang & Olufsen’s commitment to its promise of longevity: “Creating products that can stand the test of time”.
Recreated Classics

“With the Recreated Classics series, it is proven in practice that Bang & Olufsen’s unique capabilities in sound, design and craftsmanship create long-lasting circular products. “We want to show that a second-life product can be just as attractive as a new product, and that a high-quality product like the Beosound 9000 doesn’t have to have an expiration date,” says Mads Kogsgaard Hansen, Head of Product Cycle & Design at Bang & Olufsen And it continues:
“More than demonstrating our commitment to product longevity, we wanted to celebrate the resurgence of physical media that has begun in recent years. Vinyl and CDs have returned to something special, where people invest time and energy to connect with the music and artists they love. Longevity in design and passion for listening to music is essentially what we’re celebrating with the launch of the Beosystem 9000c. It’s all about keeping the listening options alive.”
Bang & Olufsen sourced 200 units of the original Beosound 9000 CD player and rebuilt them at the company’s factory in Struer, Denmark. In the same place where they were first created since 1996. The CD players are disassembled and thoroughly tested by a team of expert technicians, including many of the same colleagues who worked on the Beosound 9000 in the 1990s, using the original workshop benches. Each component is meticulously cleaned and repaired and, once inspected, each Beosound 9000 is individually tested and tuned to meet Bang & Olufsen’s exacting specifications.
Redesigned for the modern lifestyle
Based on the original design of the CD player, the Bang & Olufsen design team reversed the deep black and natural aluminum of the original Beosound 9000 color palette. speakers and with an aluminum floor stand in Cosmic Black finish that has surfaces in deep black, creating infinite depth and layers.

“We wanted to enhance the graphical edge of the Beosound 9000 while maintaining the integrity of the original design. To do this, we introduced a Cosmic Black finish to the Beosound 9000’s aluminum backplate so that the CDs stand out even more as works of art, which was Lewis’ original design intent. This creates a sharp contrast with the natural aluminum on the control panel, creating a bold and modern finish, while evoking the aesthetics of the original CD player of the 90s,” says Tiina Kierysch, head of design at Bang & Olufsen. “The result is timeless and shows that even though the two products were designed in different decades, they are closely related through colors, materials and finishes,” he continues.
The Beosystem 9000c showcases Bang & Olufsen’s expertise in aluminum processing. To achieve the various finishes, the aluminum has been brushed, etched and pearl-blasted at Bang & Olufsen’s Factory 5 in Struer, Denmark. All aluminum components of the Beosound 9000 are the original components that have been re-machined and anodized to create unity between the products despite being decades apart.
An iconic product has been reborn: the Beosound 9000
The Beosound 9000 was first introduced in 1996 as a differentiated music system that featured a six-CD slot and built-in AM/FM radio that offered the visual image of CD playback at the height of its popularity.

The Beosound 9000 was originally designed by acclaimed industrial designer David Lewis, who believed in slow development. Lewis’s ideology was that every product should have a long life, both in popularity and durability, producing new products only when the customer really needed them. His long and successful partnership with Bang & Olufsen was due to their shared philosophy of longevity, simplifying technology to serve original ideas and designs.
Key to the Beosound 9000 is the concept of ‘visualization’ where the core functionality is exposed so that the music can be viewed and the user is ‘in touch’ with the music. According to legend, the idea came to Lewis when he was walking past a record store in London, where six CDs were lined up in the window. This gave rise to the idea of displaying the album art linearly instead of hiding it in a black box. The six CDs visible, the fast movement of the CD head and the glass lid relate to the user, highlighting Bang & Olufsen’s tradition of controlling technology in an innovative way, with a highly differentiated design and aesthetic expression. moments using mechanical movement
Magical moments using mechanical movement
Bang & Olufsen is known for creating magical moments and the Beosound 9000 contains many mechanical movements that surprise and delight in many ways. The linear movement of the CD head is a complex construction that allows fast and silent movement between discs. It moves from the first to the sixth CD, holds it, registers the information and starts playback in seconds. With the Beosound 9000 the idea of auto-mounting was not necessary to use the product, but it added an element of magic so that users would always be able to read the text on the CD.
Beosound 9000’s motorized glass lid opens and closes with the same smooth motion whether it’s lying down, standing up or hanging on the wall. Two sensors and a digital time control continuously monitor the door opening and closing within the set time limit of 3.5 – 4.0 seconds.
Stream anything, anytime
When you turn on the Beosystem 9000c sound system, the “curtains” on the Beolab 28 speakers magically slide open and the speakers are ready to deliver powerful sound. The position of the “curtains” indicates whether the beam width of the emitted sound is at a narrow or wide angle, directing the listening experience, where a narrow angle minimizes sound reflections on walls and a wide one widens the listening area by diffusing the sound into the room of the room.
The music system comes with a Beoremote One controller, which allows users to fully control all settings, which can also be done via the Beolab 28 speakers or even a smartphone.
Approaching the Beolab 28s speakers, their top surface lights up. From there playback, track skipping and volume control can be activated. On the four favorite buttons, users can store radio stations via B&O Radio or a playlist from their favorite music streaming service. Wireless connectivity can be done via Airplay 2, Chromecast and Bluetooth 5.0.
